the BIG day

Guys. Mylin turned 1 on Saturday. Can you believe it?!
Our life has been uncharacteristically crazy (and chaotic busyness is normal for us!), hence the lack of a proper birthday post
Since we are out the door (tomorrow at noon) to Chicago for 3 days to watch our dearest friends, Abby and Mat get married Friday night, I may not have time to post a birthday recap anytime soon....
So for now, here's a little teaser of our sweet birthday ham :)

update on plans, hopes, and dreams

Remember our plans, hopes, and dreams for 2011?!
I thought since we were about 1/2 way through the year, it was time for an update!

Joel has found out where Franklin is moving to: about 35 minutes north of us in south Fort Wayne - yay for not having to sell our house and relocate! boo for the option of sharing lunches together during the week being gone :(
And this man definitely supported me as I finished my degree in May - I could not have accomplished it without his understanding, encouraging, motivating, and selfless attitude.  His support, help, and reaffirmation of using my gifts in this way made it possible for me to finish, even as a new mom!  I am blessed with God's perfect match for me.
He also celebrated his 5 year anniversary with them a couple weeks ago!  This might not mean anything to you, but for us it means an extra week of vacation each year which we are ALL looking forward to! (not for actual vacations, but for more time to spend together!)
He has lost 10 more of his 15 lbs to go! (total of 20 in 8 months!!!) This man is a rock star.
And he also trained for a ran (most of) the Indy Mini!
He sure meets his goals quickly - its 6 months into the year and all he has left is 5 lbs to lose!

I have most definitely finished graduate school and now can sign my name, Rachel Draper, MA :)
I also am employed part-time as a counselor with Life Matters Counseling, a ministry of Youth for Christ
I trained for an ice cream eating contest the Indy Mini this spring as well and ran a bit and walked a lot of it!
And while I haven't become more involved in worship ministry at our church yet (I was planning on playing the keys once in awhile) I am definitely in the middle of ministry transformation...just praying for guidance on where, how, and to who God wants me to minister...for more info check out the 'radical living' tab on my blog

Our sweet little miss Mylin...she has done SO much that I don't know if I can even report it all!
She currently has 8 teeth showing - which makes for an absolutely ADORABLE grin!
She has been taking steps for about 4 weeks now, but still hasn't taken off across a room yet! (we are ok with that, she has this awesome, spider-like crawl with her head down to battle Eme's licks)  :)
And she is going to turn 1 year old in 10 days!!! I can hardly believe that!
As for words...she is really taking off here too!  She says mama, daddy, meow, bite, milk; she signs more, and all done; and she can wave byebye, clap, click her tongue, blow bubbles, pretend she's talking on her 'phone' (hand) to daddy at work, make farting noises with her mouth, and bounce on command - she is absolutely amazing!

Now...what we'll we accomplish during the next 6 months?!

What have YOU accomplished lately?!

our little 'boy'

Did you think this was going to be a post about a new draper baby on the way?!
Sorry to fool and disappoint you!

This is actually a funny story about a recent trip to the library...
A week ago mylin went to her first 'wee read' session at the library
This consists of other under 2 year old's and their parents/grandparents taking them to an interactive reading/story hour
This particular day it was crazy thunderstormy all morning
It was also projected to be 83 degrees
So i put mylin and i in some coordinating jungle outfits: i had birds of paradise on my shirt and she had grey and white zebra print shorts with a grey onesie
As i stepped outside a few minutes before brittany got here to pick us up i noticed that the rainy weather had kept the temperature pretty low - too cold for baby mylin in her cute shorts
As I scurried back in to frantically change both of us into jeans...and I suddenly realized Mylin looked like a little boy!
But her grey onesie had a sweet tiny embellishement on it (a lace bow) and thought that'd give her away since I didn't have time to grab a headband (not like she would cooperate and keep it on her head anyways!)

(she was embarrassed that she looked like a boy...)  :(

As I relay this whole story to Brittany we drive to the library and get all set up in the reading room
First thing out of anyone's mouth is commenting on how cute my little guy is!
Ha!
Brittany and I just crack up laughing!
I politely correct this grandma and tell her (briefly) my funny morning story we all chuckle and I tell her I am seriously not upset or offended - I did this to myself!
As I'm sure you can imagine - she just kept getting referred to as 'he' all during story hour!
To top it all off her name tag said "MYLAN" on it - and I was sooo embarrassed already that my she looked like a he, I was afraid to ask them to make a new name tag with the correct spelling on it!
Thankfully Brittany coaxed me into it and they were graciously obliging

Needless to say, we promptly returned home and changed back into our cute shorts and I made a mental note that Mylin will be wearing a pink dress to the next reading hour :)

Whew.  What a morning :)

mocha punch recipe and jam session

This is my all time favorite party or shower drink to make and/or provide
Very simple and VERY tasty!

Mocha Punch
(I usually double the recipe - makes it easy to use up all the ice cream!)

1 1/2 qts water
1/2 c. chocolate drink mix (nesquik, ovaltine, etc)
1/2 c. sugar
1/4 c. instant coffee granules
1/2 gal vanilla ice cream
1/2 gal chocolate ice cream
garnish: whip cream

Bring water to a boil; remove from heat. Add drink mix, sugar, and coffee granules; stir until dissolved. Pour into a container; cover. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours. Remove from refrigerator at least 30 minutes before serving; shake or stir and pour into a punch bowl. Spoon in ice cream; stir until parially melted. Garnish with whipped cream. Serves about 25 (I don't necessarily agree with this...hence why I double it!)

We recently tried our hand at making strawberry jam! (the carrots are not included!)  Below is our jam making process in pictures! (recipe from the certo package)

(these are being frozen for future consumption)

If you're lucky - maybe one of these jars will end up at your house!

Guest post: old friend and roommate, Jill!

I don't know how to introduce this post.  The person who wrote it has so much history with me that I could tell stories about...yet the content of this is deep, moving, disturbing, enlightening, and convicting!  So how do I begin to prepare you for that?!

This post is from my friend, Jill, with whom I have a long past and hopefully a longer future!  I can't really remember a time in my life when I didn't know of Jill, but I knew we became great friends in 5th grade.  For the next few years we were super close until a fight in gym glass on the last day of our 8th grade year (I don't remember what the fight was about, do you Jill?!)  Fast forward all through high school when we were sometimes together, but never exclusively and cut to us both at the introduction day at Huntington University.  We both stay overnight with a selected roommate who will also be a freshman in the fall of 2003.  Jill's roommate never showed up - so she bunked with me, the only other girl there that she knew!  We became quickly inseparable again and spent our freshman year of college doing everything together from talking about boys, procrastinating everything, watching Bruce Almighty over and over and over, to sharing our entire lives with each other on our Sunday night walks around campus (where the lights would always flicker out as we walked by, remember that?!).  As that school year ended, so it seemed our friendship did as well.  Although we were at each other's weddings and kept with each other through mutual friends, it wasn't until the almost birth of their daughter, Ivy, did Jill and I get connected again.  Now I am so thrilled to have a friend like her back in my life.  She is vulnerable, open, encouraging, determined in her conviction, and an example to me of what living a life for Christ really means.

She has been kind enough to share with us what the Lord is doing in her and her husband, Aaron's life.  This post is going to rock your world!

For the past couple of years, the Lord has been teaching my husband and me a lot—a lot about how short this life is (especially compared to eternity!!), about how it is all about His glory, about how privileged we are to know the gospel, and about how many people there are in the world who have NEVER had a chance to hear the gospel of Jesus Christ. We are so blessed, but we always just accepted those blessings and thanked God for them—we never thought that maybe God blessed us so that we would have adequate means to spread His gospel to the ends of the earth. We now realize that we were wrong earlier in our marriage to think that the Lord blessed us with great Christian upbringings, close friends, financial stability, intelligence, education, and numerous freedoms just to give us a happy, comfortable life. We now know that He has blessed us so that we can bless others.

Because of all of this, we are obeying the Great Commission and will hopefully be going to an unreached tribe/people group to teach them about our Lord Jesus. There are hundreds of tribes and people groups who are totally isolated from the “outside world” because no one else speaks their language and/or no one can access them due to their location deep in the jungle. There are actually many tribes right now who have been contacted and asked if they would want a missionary to come live with them and teach them truth. Many of those tribes have said yes, but they have been waiting decades for a missionary to actually come. There are just not enough missionaries going to fill all of the needs. Here is a staggering statistic: There are currently 1,568 people groups who are not only “unreached” (meaning they have less than 2% Christians), but they are also unengaged. That means there are ZERO Christians and ZERO missionaries in those people groups right now. Some of those 1,568 people groups have only a couple hundred people, while others have millions of people.

This is a video that shows a more world-wide perspective of Christianity rather than our comfortable American perspective that we seem to be so immersed in. I encourage you to watch it!

Tears of the Saints

I don’t think that everyone needs to go to an unreached tribe to fulfill the Great Commision. However, I do think that all Christians need to be sharing their faith in some capacity and be passionate about missions in some way—either going, praying, supporting, or sending. It is not a drudgery or requirement—it is a blessed privilege that Christ gave us to spread His gospel in this short life we have!

draper garden 2011

The first post of our 2011 garden
We planted it Sunday May 22nd
Because I haven't yet figured out how to draw on my blog pictures I post - I will just tell you what is there!
2 tomato plants separated by a cilantro plant.  4 spinach plants and 4 zucchini plants.

Over here, beside our home we have a zillion raspberry plants (we began with 15 last year, not sure if we even had both male and female, but this year there are close to 50 and we have little flower buds!!!) 4 jalapeno plants and 1 hot garden pepper plant, and a bunch of chives transplated from Joel's parents.
(Also, our rocking climatis climbing!)
A different view showing off all the raspberries

 An above view of peppers

 And more raspberries
Updates to come!

What did you plant in your garden this year?

homemade granola bars

This recipe was taken from my friend Kim's mom: Mom's Peanut Butter Granola
I made this for our recent mushroom hunting trip to Petoskey, MI - and it went over very well with the starving men during their lunch/hunting break :)

3 c. oatmeal
1/2 c. dry roasted peanuts (I didn't add these cause I don't like them!
1/2 c. unsweetened coconut
3 T. sesame seeds
(I also added a lot of ground flax seed, cinnamon chips, chocolate chips, and cinnamon which it didn't call for)
Mix all above in a large bowl

1/2 c. creamy peanut butter
1/2 c. packed brown sugar
1/4 c. butter
1T. light corn syrup
1/4 t. salt

Stir above together over medium heat about 3 minutes or until smooth.  Pour over oat mixture and stir until well blended.  Line a jelly roll pan with aluminum foil and grease lightly.  Spread oat mixture evenly in pan.  Bake 350 degrees for 10 min. Stir.  Bake 10 more minutes until lightly golden.  Lift foil with oats from pan and cool before storing.
I then cut them into bars and put the remaining crumbles in a bag to put on yogurt.

Thanks for the great recipe and great snack Kim!

The big mushroom hunt of 2011 (part 2)

Did you catch part 1 of mushroom hunting?!  This is a continuation of our weekend in Petoskey, MI
Here is Bushie (polish endearment for 'grandma') with Jace and Mylin - they love their books!

Since Jace turned 1 one week before we went and Mylin's first birthday was 1 month away - we had a little celebration for them up there!

Mylin got a card from Bushie and Jodgie (polish endearment for 'grandpa') and although she couldn't manage to pull the card out of the envelope she did manage to pull the bill out of the card which was still in the envelope! Little stinker :)
Jace was very messy and Mylin was very dainty!

After the party we took the babies to the pool to play!  Our last encounter with the pool (in NC for Brandon Brown's wedding) was very sad for Mylin. This experience started out a little hairy but ended up with a very happy girl!

Then the kiddos had to be cleansed :)

All of that water left our little miss with very wrinkley toes!
What a great weekend with family - so thankful to have so much love from my in-laws!

The big mushroom hunt of 2011 (part 1)

We were scheduled to leave at 7:30am!  The high chair was all packed up so Miss Mylin had to eat breakfast while sitting on a big girl chair - sweet expression!

My view from the back seat - two sleeping lovelies and two sleeping puppies :)

Mylin's first mushroom hunt with daddy!

Family picture in the woods :)

Posing the cousins around a 'shroom
Ok, funny story. We were in the downstairs bedroom with two twin beds and a door into the bathroom.  This tiny hallway shows our room from the bathroom door view.  The first night we had the packnplay in this location - out of the way of mom and dad, right?  WRONG.  Little Miss could stand up and just STARE at us from her baby prison!  She would wail and cry.  Since we started babywise in December, we have not had more than 1 other night of her not sleeping 12-14 hours - until this night!

So how did we improvise?! By putting her sad soul in the open closet :) I know, right? Sounds wrong that my baby slept in a closet, but as you can see, its not as bad as it sounds :) And she slept beautifully the rest of the vacation!

Here's a glimpse of what a morel looks like

Part of our 40 lb plunder! (around these parts you call sell 1 lb for about $40-$50...)

One of my favorite pictures ever!

worship service on the stairs

Have you heard this song?!
Mylin and I are lucky enough to always hear it on the radio when we're home during the day
Sometimes we have a worship service to it on the stairs

can't get enough of this girl!

She hams it up for the camera!

Our first Mother's Day together :)
Her newest favorite trick - stair climbing (and peeking through the rails!)

She loves to point and shriek - I love it too!
Most beautiful girl in my world :)
