30 day shred...

While I'm away and we're waiting for the poll to close on the So You Think You Can Dance dances...I thought I'd update you on something I've been doing lately...
Jillian's 30 day shred.
Yep, I think I've alluded to an interest in it before - but didn't start it until August 4th!
So now I'm in over a week and have bumped it up to Level 2
Its intense, I get sweaty, I alternate between cans of diced pineapple and tomato sauce as weights...
And I am feeling a difference!
I'm so psyched about this
I haven't noticed weight melting off yet...but I have noticed a difference in my endurance, and my leg and arm strength (come on abs, catch up!)

Have you ever done the 30 day shred?
What is your opinion of it?!

What is an exercise favorite that you could share with us?!

mini in review

We survived!
13.1 miles later and we're still alive, well, and considering implementing more 'athons' into our life!

The details:
We were officially Nick and Cheris because we traded another couple for our 5K positions
This made for funny updates sent to my brothers and a few friends :)
We began the race together running 2 miles, walking 1, running a 3rd and then splitting up when I took a restroom break
At this point I stayed with my friend and classmate, Kellie and we proceeded to walk mostly and run probably the equivalent of another mile throughout the remainder of the race
I finished at roughly 3 1/2 hours!
Joel (who is absolutely AMAZING) ran about 6 more miles and walked just over 3 finishing in just less than 3 hours!
I am so proud of him!

The not so funny part of finishing...you don't get to stop :(
You have to walk a few more blocks to get your medal, through the area to receive some snacks (which I nearly ate through their wrapping I was so hungry!) and then on to the Youth for Christ tent to talk to our fellow fundraisers about their day.
We got free burgers and fries and other food and sat for about 5 minutes before we had to walk to the bus.
Ouch...at this point I REALLY realized how sore my poor feet were!
During the bus ride home they swelled up and felt like they were going to pop out of my shoes!

That night we soaked and lounged, recovering from our 3am wake up call and less than 5 hours of sleep...
I am so pleased and blessed to have only mildly sore leg muscles and 2 blisters - so much less than could have happened!
Joel is struggling with his IT Band flare up (leg muscle issue - google it), an inflammed spot on his foot and 1 blister
Thanks to Kim's blister care blog we knew how to take care of these pests right away!

whirlwind May

And so the first week of our whirlwind month of May has begun!
This month we are doing our first half marathon (TOMORROW!), celebrating my first mother's day, our three year anniversary, graduating with my Master's in Counseling, our nephew Jace's 1st birthday, and the Draper annual vacation to Petoskey, MI for mushroom hunting.
Whew.

Oh, and I AM OFFICIALLY EMPLOYED AS A COUNSELOR!
I will continue my work with Life Matters Counseling at our local Youth for Christ chapter
This position is ideal for us
It is 1 day a week in an office setting and 1 day a week (during the school year) at a local high school
YAY!

I am overjoyed at God's goodness and provision - I am excited to see what else He has in mind for our future!

(coming soon - back to frequent posts, updates, and challenges!)

guest blogger: Kim

This is a blog from one of my dearest friends, Kim.  She turns 27 today!!!
Kim and I still aren't exactly sure how or when we became friends, but it was through mutual friends that neither of us are as close to as we are to each other - here, 8ish years later.
Kim and her husband Dave have been married 2 1/2 years, have a silly 6-toed cat, Mosie, and are expecting their first child, a son, in August.
I love Kim because of her always-ready ability to crack a one-liner and find the irony in any situation.  I am so grateful for her companionship, confidentiality, and challenge she's never afraid to offer.  She is a woman after God's own heart living in a marriage seeking His kingdom's work that is inspiring to Joel and I.  She's beautiful, confident, determined, joyful, and blessing to have as a friend!
I tend to be too sappy with these intros.
Did I mention she runs like a madwoman?  Still, at almost 5 months pregnant?!  Well, read on about it...

I love running. I love running in all forms – training runs, racing runs, running with friends, running by myself, long runs, short runs, fast runs, slow runs, runs that work out stress and emotion, runs that leave me really tired. Sometimes I have runs that don’t feel the best and sometimes I can get burned out from too much running and have to take a break. But when it all comes down to it, I LOVE running. I feel strong when I run and connected to my body. After runs I feel more put together, relaxed, and mentally stable. But getting started with running can be hard. Really hard! Here are a couple things I think are important to know to get you started (and keep you going!):

Run/walk: Starting running can be daunting… and difficult! You might not even be able to run one mile continually, and that’s okay. But it can also be discouraging, feeling like you’re barely running anything. Start by running and walking. It’ll give you time to recover from the running bouts, but will still get your body used to running in general. Try running for 3 minutes, walking for 1. As you can, increase how many minutes you’re running in between the walk breaks.

Start slow: Don’t look at your pace when you first start running – just run to run. A good pace is one where you can talk while you run. Not “talk a mile a minute/chatty Cathy”, but you should be able to hold a small conversation as you run. If you’re gasping for air every other word, you’re probably pushing it too fast. Don’t be discouraged by your speed. The more you run, the faster you’ll get. It takes time.

Get fitted for shoes: If you’re just starting running, get the right shoes! This will make a huge difference in how your body and your feet will feel. Find a running store that will videotape you running on a treadmill (This is a complimentary service. Three Rivers Running in Fort Wayne is a great store or The Running Company in Indianapolis is also awesome.). They’ll then evaluate how you run – how your foot falls, if you pronate, your foot shape, etc. The right shoe will provide you with the right support in the right areas. And a shoe that fits won’t leave you with blisters and a sore foot. I got fitted for my first pair of shoes and have just bought the same shoe (in updated models) every year since. I rarely get blisters or sore feet.

Running form: Running form is really important in keeping your body healthy and helping you have the best run possible. If you cross your arms in front of your chest, you might end up with a really bad side stitch. If you run trying to take the longest strides possible, you might have knee or ankle pain. Proper running form helps you feel your best while you’re running. Ideally, you want to have good, upright posture. Your arms should swing loosely by your sides, hands grazing your hips. Your foot should land under your hips – not out in front. It’s better to take small, short steps than long, bounding steps. You’ll also want to try to land more on your midfoot than the heel. (See here for a great illustration and article about running form.)

Enjoy the run: Make the run FUN! If you’re not enjoying running, you’re probably not going to stick with it. Find what makes it fun for YOU. Is it new music on your ipod? A book on CD? Podcast downloads from NPR? Maybe it’s no music at all – just being alone, listening to your breathing and your feet. Maybe you like the competitive edge – pushing yourself a little further every time. Whatever it is, find what you love about running. And if you genuinely just don’t love it and can’t love it, find what you do love! Maybe it’s walking or biking or tennis or the elliptical. Just find what works for you – you’ll stick with something you really love.
When it all comes down to it, running is about what works for you. You don’t have to run as fast as someone else or as far. You don’t have to run a certain number of days a week or a certain number of minutes. Just find what works for you, what makes you feel your best! And if you do start running and love it, come tell me about it! I would love to hear about it!

Submit your running: Once you start running it's easy to get consumed with the numbers - how far you've gone, how fast, your total mileage, if you beat last week's time, if you beat last month's mileage, etc. Submit your running to God and let Him use it the way he wants to. For me, God used running to connect me in a positive way to my body and to help build my self-confidence. It'll look different for everyone, but make sure you're running for the right reasons! God wants to use all things to help build and grow us!

goal: attained!

It happened!
This morning the scale showed me the same number it did when I found out (just over a year ago) that I was pregnant!
Newsflash: weighing in post-pregnancy at your pre-pregnancy weight does not mean it is all distributed back in the same way....some stuff still doesn't fit!
But I will take this as success :)

workout/weight loss update

spinning is going great!
i'm still doing it 2 times a week with another new mama - which keeps me accountable!
this last week i also joined a zumba class that was free on saturday morning
WHEW!
that was SO fun and funny and i was sore afterwards!

the exercise helps me sleepy body be productive when i get up and get it moving
it also helps me get a great start to my morning and provides some alone time for joel and i on those mornings to enjoy breakfast together (i'm up at 4:30, home and showered by 6:30 and joel doesn't leave until 7:15)

all this to say that i'm feeling good post baby!
my goal was to lose all the weight by my birthday (6 days away)
however, these last 5 lbs are just lingering (this may or may not be due to my new obsession with all things oreo...oreo ice cream, plain oreos, and this new oreo/pudding pie - recipe coming soon!)
it also doesn't help that bluffton's 100th street fair begins tonight and we live so close that the grease smell permeates our house and the food somehow makes it to my stomach (and thighs, and bottom, and so on...)
i'll enjoy all of it though!
yummy! :)

cycling/spinning

today i went to a spinning (cycling) class at our local gym/workout placething
i went with a girlfriend of mine who also had a baby girl in june
we signed up for a 3 month aerobic package and are trying to go spinning twice a week to help melt off the excess baby weight!!!

day 1: can't remember the last time i sweat this much and my undercarriage is SORE from 'riding' a bike again (we all know this feeling...) but i felt great afterwards!
plus, because the class is at 5:15am, when i get home shortly after 6 and showered up i am able to spend some one-on-one time with joel which is hard to come by these days

wish me luck!
i have 7 lbs to go in about 5 weeks before my goal of being back at pre-baby weight by my birthday!
